Introduction

The Department of Humanities and Sciences was established in 1997 and has since grown into a hub of academic excellence. It comprises a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members, supported by dedicated non-teaching staff. At present, the department has 63 faculty members with doctoral degrees, while 26 others are pursuing their doctoral research. Many faculty members are experts in the emerging areas of English, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences, and have made significant contributions to their respective fields.

The primary objective of the department is to provide a strong foundation in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English, which serves as the basis for advanced studies in engineering and technology. The strength of the department lies in the integration of knowledge and skills, supported by a culture of teamwork and commitment. Special coaching sessions are conducted during weekends, along with crash courses before university and end semester examinations, to ensure that students of all learning levels are well supported.

The department houses spacious, fully equipped laboratories in Physics, Chemistry, and Communication Skills. These laboratories are furnished with sophisticated equipment that caters to the academic requirements of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. They also serve as a resource for final-year projects. In addition, students are given systematic training in group discussions, presentations, and interview techniques to enhance their employability.

The department maintains an in-house library with a well-curated collection of textbooks and reference materials in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and English. These resources are both examination-oriented and academically enriching. Faculty and students have access to these books, and the collection is regularly updated with the latest editions. Every faculty member is also provided access to the internet, which facilitates knowledge sharing, research, and professional development.

The department actively promotes teaching and research as complementary pursuits. Faculty members regularly present papers at conferences, and participate in workshops, seminars, and faculty development programmes (FDPs). Guest lectures, industrial visits, and in-plant training programmes are organized to provide students with practical exposure and industry insights.

The department offers research programmes in three disciplines:

  1. Mathematics
  2. Physics
  3. Chemistry

It has 11 recognized research supervisors guiding 18 full-time and part-time research scholars. The department has also produced 4 doctorates in Mathematics to date.
